Why does my Tera2 PCoIP Zero Client perform poorly on a WAN, compared to a software client on the same network?

If you are experiencing refresh issues of image data when scrolling through text and/or images using a PCoIP Zero Client on a WAN network, ensure that you enable the Low Bandwidth Text Codec (LBTC) setting.

Note:

  • The LBTC setting is available on TERA2321 PCoIP Zero Clients only.
  • The LBTC is in all releases of HP Anyware PCoIP Agent and VMware Horizon View 5.2 and newer.

 

LBTC is a compression method that provides improved bandwidth usage when encoding lossless data, such as text and background. It does not apply to lossy data, such as video. This option is disabled by default, except in PCoIP Software Clients where it is a fixed setting.

For WAN and bandwidth-constrained use cases, enabling LBTC decodes text in software on one of the MIPS processors in the application-specific integrated circuit. If the amount of text exceeds ~10Mbps, the rest will be decoded in silicon. Employing LBTC will optimize your user experience on a WAN.

Disabling LBTC is the ideal choice for a LAN use case, where text is decoded using the silicon decoder, which is more than 10 times faster than decoding in software on the MIPS processor, but requires higher bandwidth.

To enable Low Bandwidth Text Codec setting from the PCoIP Zero Client AWI:

  1. Navigate to Configuration > Image menu.
  2. Ensure the Enable Low Bandwidth Text Codec box is checked.
  3. Restart the zero client.
