The steps below describe the basic steps to upgrade the VMware Virtual Machine (VM) hardware through vSphere

Notes:

  • It is recommended that you backup your VM, and test it prior to rolling it to production.
  • Changing the hardware version may impact compatibility with older versions of ESXi. Use VMware docs for version mapping.

Steps Overview. For more specific information, refer to VMware documentation (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1010675).

  1. Power down the VM.
  2. Take a snapshot.
  3. Power on the VM and do an update to get the latest security fixes.
  4. Power down the VM.
  5. Upgrade the hardware version.
  6. Power up the VM and verify everything is working as expected.
  7. If there are issues, roll back to the snapshot taken in step 2.
