DHCP IP address lease changes when the PCoIP Zero Client firmware or PCoIP Remote Workstation firrmware is upgraded

Problem

Updating PCoIP Zero Client firmware or PCoIP Remote Workstation Card firmware results in a new DHCP IP address lease. The issue will only occur under the following circumstances:

  • Updating a PCoIP Zero Client from firmware 4.7.1 and prior to 4.8.0 and newer.
  • Updating a PCoIP Remote Workstation Card from firmware 4.7.1 and prior to 4.7.2 and newer.

Cause

In PCoIP Zero Client Firmware 4.8.0 and PCoIP Remote Workstation Card the DHCP discovery packet option 61 (client identifier) value was changed due to an incorrect hardware type byte. The incorrectly set byte was causing some DHCP servers to not issue a IP address. As a result of the change to the hardware type byte, the PCoIP Zero Client and PCoIP Remote Workstation Card will appear to be new devices to the DHCP server.

Resolution

For the PCoIP Zero Client, it will only obtain a new DHCP IP address when first upgraded to 4.8.0 or newer. Once the PCoIP Zero Client has been upgraded to 4.8.0 or newer, subsequent PCoIP Zero Client firmware upgrades will not cause the PCoIP Zero Client to obtain a new DHCP IP address.

For the PCoIP Remote Workstation Card, it will only obtain a new DHCP IP address when first upgraded to 4.7.2 or newer. Once the PCoIP Remote Workstation Card has been upgraded to 4.7.02 or newer, subsequent PCoIP Remote Workstation Card firmware upgrades will not cause the PCoIP Remote Workstation Card to obtain a new DHCP IP address.

Prior to upgrading the PCoIP Zero Client or PCoIP Remote Workstation Card firmware ensure there is enough free IP Addresses in the DHCP scope to allow for the upgrade. A temporary work around is to reduce the DHCP lease time and upgrade the PCoIP Zero Clients in batches to allow the old IP address lease to expire and the IP address to return to the DHCP pool.
