HP Anyware is the enterprise software that IT needs to keep people and teams productive with secure access to their digital workspaces from any mix of infrastructure (cloud, data center, edge, workstation) and end-user device (PC, Mac, laptop, tablet, thin and zero client), anywhere.

This post was first published in June 2022. It has been updated to reflect an award nomination and new product details.

We are excited to announce that HP, along with partners Verizon and Amazon Web Services (AWS), has been nominated in the Best Multi-Company Team Collaboration category of the DEG, the Digital Entertainment Group Tech Ops Technology Achievement Award, for the revolutionary remote video editing solution, Verizon 5G Edge Editor.

The edge editor replicates an on-prem user experience and enables real-time editing and collaboration from almost any location for distributed media applications such as video editing, cloud gaming and video streaming. The collaboration between HP Anyware and Verizon helps creators be more productive, thus meeting the increasing demand for content.

As hybrid work fast becomes the norm across a variety of industries, businesses are searching for more effective remote compute options. Verizon 5G Edge has successfully tested HP Anyware (based on PCoIP® technology) with AWS Wavelength services for improved remote gaming, streaming and editorial workflows. The findings of the tests have been outlined in the HP Anyware and Verizon 5G Edge whitepaper.

Graphics-intensive companies within the Broadcast, Game Development, and Media & Entertainment industries have high compute needs on the go, including on cloud and mobile. Engineers, designers, artists, and editors require low latency, color accuracy, and pixel-perfect quality wherever they are accessing their files from so they can have the best user experience while completing their projects.

Additionally, IT teams need to ensure the files and devices that employees access are secure, especially in hybrid or remote work scenarios.

HP Anyware and Verizon 5G Edge bring together the best aspects of remote performance and connectivity for a variety of industries.

In this post, we’ll explain how Verizon 5G Edge works with HP Anyware and highlight the most common use cases for combining these two solutions.

What is Verizon 5G Edge?

5G Edge is the next generation of mobile network technology, offering a secure and fast connection that can be both public and private. More effective than WI-FI6, 5G delivers 100 times the speed of 4G. Edge computing, a type of compute that is done near the source data or end-user, including multi-access edge services, further boosts and enables 5G technology.

How does HP Anyware work with 5G Edge?

HP Anyware is based on the secure PC-over-IP (PCoIP) remote display protocol that only transmits fully encrypted pixels to endpoints instead of raw data, so business information never leaves your data center. HP Anyware includes features from ZCentral Remote Boost and offers more flexibility, productivity and collaboration options across any cloud, data center, edge, OS, or workstation infrastructures wherever you access your data and applications from.

For graphics-intensive projects, Anyware is a complete solution, supporting peripherals like Wacom pens and tablets, multimonitor 4K, as well as 3D design applications while maintaining lossless text, color accuracy and interactivity.

With HP Anyware and Verizon 5G Edge, professionals in creative fields can securely access their files, no matter how graphics-intensive, from anywhere using any device, whether desktop, cloud, or mobile.

What are the use cases for 5G Edge?

In media and gaming industries, there are numerous compute-intensive tasks to be completed, often simultaneously. These tasks are often graphics-intensive, with real or virtual machines, or zero clients, loading, transcoding, and rendering massive amounts of audio and video onto display endpoints.

Below are five common use cases for projects across media, broadcast, and gaming industries that can be optimized using Verizon 5G Edge and HP Anyware.

1. Streaming

Editors need to stream 4K video without dropping frames when they’re viewing projects or testing gameplay. On 4G LTE with an AWS cloud server instance, it was found that frames were missed, the video was choppy and it even stopped at times. Only 20 frames could be supported at any time, and even with 5G UW, 60 FPS could be managed for short periods of time.

However, Verizon 5G Edge servers with AWS Wavelength streamed high-quality videos, without any loss in audio-video synchronization, and no buffering. Frame rate support even on wireless channels was high, 60 FPS, which is the standard for streaming.

2. Editing and designing

While viewing video requires uninterrupted streaming, any interaction, such as editing or designing in real time, requires video transmission to adapt constantly. Any latency in tasks can be detrimental to user experience, especially when deadlines need to be met.

Using HP Anyware with Verizon 5G Edge produced excellent results for editors and designers. In mobile AWS instances, there were no lost packets, neither did any frames skip. The low-latency editors experienced in these instances matched their sessions while on-premises.

HP Anyware and Verizon 5G also work seamlessly with peripherals, including Wacom pens and tablets, as well as monitors, so artists can design with ease from anywhere.

3. Gaming

Similar to editing, gaming is also a graphics-intensive process that can be a challenge to achieve in remote or hybrid environments.

As detailed in the Verizon 5G Edge whitepaper, using HP Anyware for a cloud-gaming scenario proved positive results. As had been observed with video editing, there was low latency during game play, FPS rates remained consistent, and there was a marked decrease in packets lost from 4G to 5G Edge, improving game responsiveness.

4. Remote work

Replicating the on-prem experience at home, in a café or an offline workspace was one of the biggest challenges businesses faced during the pandemic. Though businesses could use the HP Anyware solution on their systems, they had little control over the network connectivity their employees encountered.

Verizon 5G Edge mitigates connectivity issues for production teams, and HP Anyware makes it possible to access native applications, business information and files, and peripherals with ease.

Additionally, HP Anyware uses PCoIP technology to create secure environments for businesses. The PCoIP remote display protocol only transmits encrypted pixels from the server to endpoints so sensitive business information never leaves the data center.

5. AR/VR

HP Anyware and Verizon 5G Edge work in sync to design and stage augmented reality and virtual reality streams. Many of the benefits seen in using the two solutions in concert for video streaming, editing, and gameplay can be seen in devices streaming AR/VR content.

Conclusion

With 5G Edge, Verizon has established itself as a leader in access and coverage. By coming together with AWS and HP Anyware, the premier hybrid work solution for numerous organizations, Verizon 5G Edge offers media and gaming production teams the kind of user experience they would have while working on-premises.
